The 7.3L power stroke diesel failed to meet stricter emissions requirements. It was replaced by the Ford 6.0L power stroke in early 2003. The 7.3L is responsible for making the Power Stroke name legendary.

1994-2003 Ford 7.3L Engine
In 1994, the 7.3L was changed to a direct injection (DI) engine and an electronic fuel injection system was added. And the 7.3L Power Stroke was officially underway.
The 1994 to 2002 turbodiesel family employed different technology from the previous generation. Its fuel pump and a separate high-pressure pump worked in tandem to boost the fuel pressure directly into each fuel injector of the hydraulic electronic direct fuel injection system. In addition, the engine features a single standard waste-gated turbocharger configuration.
