The AERA Technical Committee offers the following timing gear caution for 2011-2016 Ford 6.7L diesel
engines. This information should be followed anytime the crankshaft or timing gear service is considered.
An extreme caution is expressed for the crankshaft timing gear on the Ford 6.7L Ford diesel engine. This
gear is uniquely installed during the factory engine assembly process and does not use locating keys or
dowel pins. Removing the gear is not recommended as the correct precise location is very difficult to reestablish.
Although it’s been reported there is a separate timing gear available, it is suggested to replace the
crankshaft Part # BC3Z6303B as it is supplied with a new timing gear. It has been reported that a new
crankshaft from Ford costs less than $500.
It has also been reported that there has been numerous instances of crankshaft breakage in these engines,
possibly reflecting the seemingly low cost of a new crankshaft.
