This V-8 engine uses aluminum cylinder heads with powdered metal (PM) insert valve seats.
It has been reported the intake or exhaust valve seats may become dislodged during normal engine operation on these engines. Some of these failures have occurred after receiving technician complaints of rocker arms “falling off”. In those instances, simply relocating the rockers was only a short term repair of the problem.
Further use of the engine resulted in either another rocker mishap, loss of compression or total engine destruction when the piston and valve seat contacted each other.
This valve seat problem has been described similar to other engines such as the Ford 1.9 & 2.0L engines of 1990’s. In those engines the end location intakes failed most often. However, in these Chrysler-Jeep engines no specific location has been more problematic than the others. For engines affected with this type of failure, replacement of all valve seats is the only action possible to assure actual interference fit of ALL inserts. Therefore, complete seat replacement is recommended to help prevent possible repeat type failure to reoccur in other locations.
